Travelling to and from the Centre for Alternative Technology

CAT is just outside the small town of Machynlleth in mid Wales, and about twenty miles from Aberystwyth. Escorted travel by train is available for both Superweeks. In each case we will have groups starting from London, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Dumfries. En route meeting points will be as follows:

Group

Meeting Points

London

Bicester

Bristol

Cheltenham

Birmingham

Shrewsbury

Edinburgh

York, Manchester, Shrewsbury

Franfurt (Hahn)

Birmingham Airport/International

When you book, please tell us which travel point you would like to use.

Pooled Travel

We can buy tickets for you, on a pooled basis. This means that we buy tickets for everybody who wants it and then share the costs equally. You will almost certainly save if you join the pool, because we can make use of group tickets, family railcards and other savings. On past experience, pooled tickets are likely to cost £25 - £30.
If you prefer, though, you can always buy tickets yourself. If you book less than four weeks before the EcoWeek starts we will not be able to buy the tickets, but we will tell you the trains we are using so you can buy the right tickets. In either of these cases we ask for £10 to cover the costs of supplying escorts.

Travelling by Car

On the whole we would rather that children didn't travel by car to EcoWeeks, because we like public transport! However, you are welcome to deliver and collect children by car if it is more convenient for you. You can find directions for getting to the centre at the CAT website: please aim to deliver children between 4pm and 5pm on the first day and collect them between 9am and 10am on the last day.
